Jerry L. Wallace is a historian and writer, who resides with his wife, Delia, in Oxford, Kansas. For almost three decades, he was an archivist with the National Archives and Records Administration in Washington, DC, involved in records appraisal and archival administration. Among the highlights of his career was serving as historian-archivist for three presidential inaugural committees. Since his retirement, he served for a time as archivist for a small liberal arts college in Kansas and is now much involved in documenting and preserving local history.
Mr. Wallace's interest in Calvin Coolidge and the 1920's dates from his grade school days. Over the years, he has accumulated an extensive library on Coolidge and his times, which he uses not only in his own research and writings but also in helping others in their work. He has been a dedicated member of the Calvin Coolidge Memorial Foundation since 1972. He served five years as a trustee of the Foundation and since 2003, has been a member of its National Advisory Board.
He is now fully engaged in studying and writing about Coolidge. He is the author of Calvin Coolidge: Our First Radio President (2008). It tells the story of President Coolidge's pioneering, successful use of the new medium of radio. Its purpose is to ensure that President Coolidge receives the credit he is due as our first radio president. His essay, "Calivin Coolidge: An Honest Public Servant," has been chosen by the National Notary Association to appear in a compilation of essays entitled Why Coolidge Matters. As historical editor, he assisted Cynthia Bittinger in the preparation of her biography, Grace Coolidge: Sudden Star (2005). Among his other writings, he has contributed two articles to the Real Calvin Coolidge series, #16 and #18: one, on Coolidge's 1925 Presidential Inauguration, the other, on his dedication of the World War I Liberty Memorial in Kansas City in 1926. He has also written "Thoughts on Calvin Coolidge: Living On In The Public Memory" and "Thoughts on Calvin Coolidge: Politician and Office Holder," which appear on the Foundation's website.
Mr. Wallace holds a B.A. degree in history from Southwest Missouri State University in Springfield, Missouri, and an M.A. in history from the University of Missouri at Columbia. He served as a U.S. Peace Corps volunteer in malaria eradication in Thailand and as an interpreter with the U.S. Army in Viet-Nam.
