Interview: Grace Coolidge biography
Neal Charnoff Colchester, VT (2006-08-16)

Reflecting on her time at the White House, First Lady Grace Coolidge wrote that she was "I, and yet, not I - this was the wife of the President of the United States and she took precedence over me..."

But despite the obligations of her position, Vermont's first First Lady managed to transcend the role. An avid baseball fan and loved by the public, she became known as the First Lady of Baseball and was voted one of America's twelve greatest living women in 1931.

A new book by Cyndy Bittinger provides a rare glimpse behind the scenes of one of the most highly visible First Ladies of her time. Based on personal letters, "Grace Coolidge: Sudden Star" tells the story a woman unexpectedly thrown into the limelight after the sudden death of President Harding.
