Hello Fellow Educators and Parents,
I’d like to invite you to bring your students to the Calvin Coolidge birthplace at Plymouth Notch this year. If you have been there before, you know what a unique place it is. We step back in time as we near the cluster of buildings where America’s 30th President was born and raised and where he returned to his beloved Vermont.
I’m a recently retired teacher with a strong belief in multi disciplinary learning. I’d like to work with you on integrating Vermont History with such topics as agriculture, tools (simple machines), and community. I may know some of you from my work with the Vermont Alliance for Arts Education. Bookmaking is my perfect solution for “doing it all”. Some of our pre and post visit activities include the children making small simple books that present information, encourage observation and drawing, and serve as a springboard for writing. I would love to work with you these and more extensive projects. Our programs take an “In Depth History Lab” approach and are usually targeted for Fourth Graders who study Vermont History but I would be happy to work with any grade. I could tailor a visit to your goals:
- Planting, growing, and harvesting food
- Sheep shearing and wool
- Roles in a community
- Using period diaries to study the past and making and keeping a diary of your own
- Tools and simple machines on an early farm
- Cheese factory
Every visit would include a tour of the buildings with our enthusiastic docents. Please watch for a letter coming to your schools with more detailed program and reservation information. In the fall, I hope to be able to offer the option of bringing Calvin Coolidge related programs to your schools.
So, get out your calendar, confer with fellow teachers, check the budget, and give us a call to set a date, reserve the school bus and bring your students for a visit. We can’t wait to see you come up the hill!
Visit details:
- School visits from May 27 and September and October.
- Cost is $3 per student. One chaperone for every 6 students - Free.
- Plan for around three hours, including lunch break.
