Education: In-depth History Labs

Teachers and parents of homeschoolers should call 802-672-3389 to arrange an in-depth history lab. These unique tours have been created with a cadre of trained volunteers to assist at President Calvin Coolidge State Historic Site. The programs provide: a multidisciplinary connection to classroom work, standards-based instruction, active and collaborative learning, and inquiry and problem-solving experiences. Each class receives a documentary video or DVD and age-appropriate material before the visit. $3 per student, one free adult admission per six students. Please contact the Coolidge Foundation for more information.

Publications

In its effort to promote and disseminate the best in Coolidge scholarship, The Calvin Coolidge Memorial Foundation publishes and assists in the publication of books and periodicals. The Real Calvin Coolidge is an annual journal published by the Foundation since 1983. Issues of the journal, as well as other Coolidge-related publications, are available for purchase through the Foundation office. See our Bookstore page, or contact the foundation for more information.

Research

The Foundation encourages new research, conferences and symposiums. CCMF worked with the John F. Kennedy Library to present an academic conference on the life and political influence of Calvin Coolidge on July 30 & 31, 1998 in conjunction with the 75th Anniversary of the Homestead Inaugural. Speakers included Michael S. Dukakis, former governor of Massachusetts, Professor Robert E. Gilbert of Northeastern University, and Robert Sobel, the recent biographer of Calvin Coolidge. Coolidge family members also spoke. Sheldon Stern, historian at the Kennedy Library and Jim Cooke, the solo historical interpreter of Calvin Coolidge, were co-planners. The transcript produced by the conference was printed in The New England Journal of History and sent to teachers throughout New England. These papers, along with many other examples of Coolidge research, can now be found on this web site in our Research section.

Exploritas Program

Elderhostel (now called Exploritas) has been running for over 15 years under the guidance of David Briggs, owner of the Hotel Coolidge and Holly Strachen. The Program is entitled Vermont: a Special Place. Cyndy Bittinger, the retired director of the Coolidge Foundation, presents two lectures, one an overview of Vermont history and one on Calvin and Grace Coolidge. Visits to President Calvin Coolidge State Historic Site (and a talk by Site Administrator William Jenney) and Marsh-Billings National Park, and the Justin Morrill House are scheduled. Usually storytellers and Dick McCormack, Vermont State Senator and folk singer, are featured. Hotel Coolidge in White River Junction is the base of operations. Registration through Exploritas International.

Volunteer Opportunities

All nonprofit organizations rely on the support of volunteers to run events, help create policy, and carry out the work plan. At CCMF, 24 trustees create policy for the organization and work on various committees. Many of the trustees live in the region of Vermont, but some have national background and are quite helpful in our national mission. Extra volunteers are needed to help with events during the season. For more information, please contact the Foundation.
