Professor Ferrell served as a Distinguished Professor at Indiana University from 1974-1988 and Professor from 1961 to 1974. He received the distinguished teaching award in 1969, 1980 and 1983 at Indiana. His many awards include the John Addison Porter Prize from Yale University in 1951 and the George Louis Beer Prize from the American Historical Association in 1952.
A prolific writer, Ferrell’s books deal with foreign policy and the presidency. For Coolidge researchers, the following would be important to read: Peace in Their Time: The Origins of the Kellogg-Briand Pact (1952), American Diplomacy: A History (1959), The American Secretaries of State and Their Diplomacy, Vo. 11, Frank B. Kellogg and Henry L. Stimson (1963), The Talkative President: The Off the Record Press Conferences of Calvin Coolidge (1964) and The Presidency of Calvin Coolidge (1998). He also edited Grace Coolidge: An Autobiography with Lawrence E. Wikander (1992).
Professor Ferrell edited the Real Calvin Coolidge booklet of research for the Coolidge Foundation from 1985-1999. He is a resource for Coolidge scholars the world over.
