Age of Coolidge Contest Winners

Even though Calvin Coolidge was know as “Silent Cal”, he was the first president to communicate directly with the American people through the radio and did this effectively and often. He also was the last president to write his own speeches. The theme of this year’s Age of Coolidge contest was “Communication During the Coolidge Era”. Students in Grades Four through Eight were invited to submit any type of creative project that gave information and brought to life communication during President Calvin Coolidge’s life (1872-1933) and presidency (1923-1928).

Abigail Schmidt’s Period Radio

The Calvin Coolidge Memorial Foundation announces the winners of the 2008 Age of Coolidge Contest. In the Grade Four through Six category the winners are as follows. Abigail Schmidt won First Place for her impressive model of a period radio, complete with a hidden soundtrack of Coolidge speaking. Lindsay Legault-Knowles, from Benson, Vermont, took Second Place for her thorough report, “The Communication Era”. Third Place was tied between Madison Cassano’s diorama and Chris Josselyn and Michael Leprade’s timeline of political cartoons from the Coolidge era. Cassano, Josselyn, Leprade and Schmidt are sixth graders from Ludlow who visited the President Calvin Coolidge State Historic Site this fall as part of a History Exploration program.

Rydal Shrivnauth’s Drawing

In the Grade Seven and Eight Category, the winner was Rydal Shrivnauth, a Seventh Grade Homeschool student from Middleburg, Pennsylvania. Rydal visited the site this summer, learned about President Coolidge and the contest and submitted an artistically detailed booklet called “Bringing the World Together, One Living Room at a Time”. In addition to descriptive text, his report contains 10 original drawings and a detailed timeline of how communication has developed from 1820 to the present.

These projects will be on display in the Union Christian Church at Plymouth Notch during the upcoming Coolidge Christmas Open House on December 13. Awards, which include cash prizes, will be presented at 1:30. This contest is sponsored by the Calvin Coolidge Memorial Foundation, with support from Trustee Dan Churchill. The Coolidge Foundation is located at the President Calvin Coolidge State Historic Site and promotes educational activities about our President from Vermont.
